Smart Learning for All, Especially Mandarin and Cantonese Speakers
Improve Your English Conversation & Listening Skills!
Watching films and TV series with English subtitles is an excellent way to enhance your listening and speaking skills. When you hear a new word you don’t understand, write it down, look up its meaning, and try using it in a sentence.
Think about these questions:
- What topics do I usually discuss with friends and family in Chinese?
- What are my hobbies and interests?
- What would I like to do in the future?
- What do I want to do and see when I travel anywhere?
Make a list of common words you use in your native language and write the English translation next to them. Then, try forming sentences using those words.
A More Effective Way for ESL Learners
The traditional Chinese method of learning English often focuses on memorising vocabulary rather than using words in context. At the A1/A2 level, learning a large number of new words isn’t as effective as mastering how to use the words you already know. Even if you recognise some words in our lessons, at Say Hi English, we focus on helping you actively use your vocabulary in real-life situations. Once you can form and use sentences confidently, you’ll be ready for the next step.
Fluency Takes Time—Beware of Misleading Promises
You may have seen advertisements claiming,
"Learn to speak English in three months!"—
but these are misleading.
Fluency takes consistent practice. According to the CEFR framework, progressing through levels typically requires:
- A1 to A2: ~180–200 hours
- A2 to B1: ~350–400 hours
- B1 to B2: ~500–600 hours
If you study 3–5 hours per week, noticeable progress will take several months, and achieving fluency (B2/C1) will take even longer.
The best approach is steady learning with immersion techniques like the ones suggested here.
